I am moving out of the studio in NYC.
Back to Seattle to produce my next few big shows.

Here are my brothers with the quilt I made them for Christmas.

They love it apparently.

I was worried since small kids sometimes dont know what to do with functional items.

This is the second piece I have made for the traveling “Material witness” show. The Material girl I though was a good subject and a bit of a quip.

There is a lot more quilting on this than a lot of my previous work. I have been influenced by the Manhattan Quilt Guild [who asked me to join when they found out about my residency on Governors Island this fall into winter.] The women in this guild are all really proficient and experienced in this media so I am learning quite a lot by watching them. The quilting on this is an example of that.

The technique is raw edge applique.
The batting is cotton/bamboo blend.
The thread is metallic thread so there is some sheen to it when seen in the right light.

It has been sold and is hanging proudly in the living room of a good friend.

As I move into my temporary studio in Brooklyn I have to make it a place I can work with fabric and not get it so dirty.
The place is a warehouse so the floor has years of dirt on it from carts and storage from years innumerable. I had to prime the floor to get started.

I did just that.
now I have a white studio from floor to ceiling. I feel very Scandinavian.

The building is a lovely call back to a time of military presence in south Brooklyn.

I have the studio through a really sweet arts org Chashama

They work with empty spaces around NY and fill them with arts or artists.

I am so grateful that they have rented me this studio for the next 6 weekes I am in NY.

Here I am in front of my quilt at the Newark Museum. They acquired it then immediately put it up in the show!! It feels so nice to be validated like that from a respectable institution. The curator is the fella on the left of the image chatting with us. He came in on his day off to show me my work hung in the show. If you are anywhere near Newark, go down and see the museum. [sooner the better, the show is coming down early January]

The 5 months on the Island are over. Sad.
I made a few good projects and found a few fun friends.

The Throne

This piece is constructed from reclaimed Textiles.
I took Clothes and sheets discarded from the people of NY and created this quilt.

The quilt is an image of both Kanye and JAy-z. I used an Image by Troy Gua for the design.

The colors are
White: Sheets
Blue: Jeans
Black: Dress Clothes

It then reads like a rags to riches story.

It has been quilted in metallic thread so that when you are close it shines to speak to its subject matter in a tactile and visual way.

There are 1 million quilting stitches on it. [My machine counted, is the only reason I know]

I am standing there to give you scale.
[and to feel all bad ass!]

I used different colored bobbin thread so the back read as an image as well. The fabric is found and repurposed. [by me]

In this shot you can see the breadth of the stitching. each of the squares of the quilt are 2.5 inches square.

There are 1300 squares in the quilt.

I have made the quilt out of used clothes from NY.
