the American Context

Pieces of fabric from used clothes made into quilts of iconic images from American Art. This is a series that colides quilts and painting, taking techniques from both and combining them to talk about history and contemporary image making.

Man Stuff

Responding to the traditional roles within the Quilt media I wanted to create a series based on being a male and talk to the gender bias within the culture.

Gifts

These are pieces I have made as gifts. In the life of an artist there comes times [often] that one needs to make work to share. I also really like making work to barter and as presents. It gives me places to try new ideas and to experiment with techniques. [though often people end up with pictures of me....]

Commissions

These are projects made for commission. I get lots of requests to sew quilts. From bed Quilts to wall Quilts. Here are some of them. you can see a wide array of subjects and eventual finishes in both size and application.

Mad Houses

This project was sponsored by the Mad Arts Group in Seattle. I was lucky enough to be asked to participate before I left town. I covered the inside of a home with used clothing. The concept is to discuss domesticity and privacy in texture. the inside reads as though it is comprised of clothing; as though the house is made of the events and experiences lived in it.

American nostalgia

This is a set of quilts I made a few years ago for an exhibition in central California in response to a survey I sent out. I asked what evoked a nostalgia for America. I made a set of quilts from those 700 responses. I learned that there is no small set of icons that comprise American Nostalgia. I learned a few things through this process.

This is a set of all of my quilts so you can see them in one spot. There is not really an order to this list. these are scattered from different exhibitions and shows I have had across the US. My work stems from my experience and the world of art and craft. I make work as an Architect designing quilts.

Seattle Coffee

This is a design project I made for a coffee shop in Seattle. I made the pieces on the bags they get their beans shipped in from all over the world. I chose Seattle Icons as the images because it is the unifying purpose for these bags to ship in from all over.[ As well its hanging in Seattle...]

Bed Clothes

These are quilts made from used textiles. clothes, linens, towels etc. I am using traditional methods [mostly] for making quilts out of these materials. This is me learning how to be a quilter.

[Flightless Birds]

Small quilts depicting one of natures oxymorons, Made because they make me laugh. I was asked by a museum in Washington to make some pieces to sell in their store and I wanted to make some smaller and amusing pieces, so my work would be accessible to the patrons and eventually lead to a show there.
